The Kazan Icon of the Mother of God is a revered miraculous icon of the Mother of God, which appeared in Kazan in 1579. One of the most revered icons of the Russian Orthodox Church. Iconographically, the Kazan icon is usually referred to as an abbreviated version of the Hodegetria. Such icons go back to the prototype kept in the Blachernae Church in Constantinople. The Mother of God is depicted frontally, on the shoulders, in characteristic clothes, with a slight tilt of the head towards the Child. The Infant Jesus Christ is seated on one hand of the Mother of God. The Infant Christ is presented strictly from the front, the figure is limited to the waist, only the right hand with a blessing gesture is visible. The second hand of the Infant God is hidden by clothing. The views of the Mother of God and the Divine Infant are directed directly at the person praying.
