From the family of a railway employee.

In childhood and youth he worked as a newspaperman, baker, bookbinder. He received his general education in a labor school-commune. He graduated from the Samara Art and Pedagogical College (1922).He lived in Moscow.

He worked mainly as a landscape painter, in the 1920s - the first half of the 1930s he created works on a historical and revolutionary theme; often turned to the interior genre, portrait. In his work, he was influenced by the art of the masters of the Union of Russian Artists and N. P. Krymov, whom he met in 1938. Master of lyrical landscape, with accurate transmission of the effects of evening and night lighting.The artist became famous for the landscapes of the war years, in particular the painting cycle "Volga — Russian River" (1944-1945; State (Stalin) Prize 1946).

Winner of the Lenin Prize for a cycle of landscapes (1980). For his work, he was awarded the titles of a full member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1967), People's Artist of the USSR (1971), awarded the Orders of Lenin and the Red Banner of Labor.
