Vladimir Donatovich Orlovsky was born on January 20 (February 1), 1842 in Kiev. The artist's father was a Kiev landowner. He received his primary art education at the Second Kiev Gymnasium from I. M. Soshenko. Later he moved to St. Petersburg, entered the Imperial Academy of Arts in the class of A. P. Bogolyubov. While in St. Petersburg, Vladimir Orlovsky got acquainted with the works of many master marinists. He also got acquainted with the works of T. G. Shevchenko. He painted with oil paints even before entering the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1861, where he began to make rapid progress, so that already in 1863 he received a large silver medal of the Academy. During his studies, he painted sketches in the Crimea, Kiev province, Karelia, the Grand Duchy of Finland and the Caucasus. 1868 — graduated from the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts with the title of class artist of the 1st degree, and for the Crimean views received a large gold medal (1867) and the right to travel abroad at state expense. For three years (1869-1872) he worked in Paris, Switzerland, Germany and Italy. Participated in the activities of the Kiev Drawing School of N. I. Murashko, in the organization of the Kiev Art School; taught at the Academy of Arts. The artist's paintings are very diverse both in nature (from Finland to the Crimea) and in content (cloudy day, winter moonlit night, sunset, autumn flood, etc.). He wrote a lot for the aristocracy of Moscow and St. Petersburg, for the royal family, was popular on a par with I. K. Aivazovsky, his work shows the influence of A. I. Kuindzhi. The artist died on March 16, 1914 in Italy, and was buried in Kiev.
