The sculpture is made according to the model of the famous French sculptor Marius Jean Antonin Mercier (1845-1916), for which he received a first class medal and a Cross of the Legion of Honor from the French government at the Salon of the Paris Academy of Arts. The bronze figure of "David" Mercier was commissioned by the French state at the Barbedienne factory for the 1873 World's Fair in Vienna.
